Shibari: a Japanese art!

Figure of A purple shibari rope around a showroom cushion.

The term shibari (縛り), literally meaning "tied, bound" in Japanese, was originally used to describe the traditional art of tying packages in Japan. However, in the 1990s, in the West, it became the most widespread appellation for the art of bondage "kinbaku".

Traditionally, knots were placed on the wrists, chest, back and legs. The ropes used could be of different colors, each carrying particular symbolism.

In Japan, towards the end of the 16th century, shibari consisted of tying up prisoners according to four golden rules:
- Ensure that the prisoner cannot free himself,
- Avoid causing physical or mental harm when tying,
- Keep the tying technique secret,
- Make sure the result is aesthetically pleasing.

Today, the practice is gaining in popularity and attracting the attention of people not necessarily in the BDSM community. It's now possible to learn more about shibari through online videos, but also at group classes where participants can learn rope-tying skills.
